One Shirt. Two Clubs. Two Leagues.

A football shirt usually tells you which club you belong to. GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava are using one to say something different: that two clubs, two countries and two football cultures can share the same story. To mark 30 years of friendship between their supporters, the Polish and Czech clubs have created a joint football shirt featuring a combined GKS Katowice–Baník Ostrava badge.

But this is not simply a commemorative merchandise release. Both clubs will wear the same shirt design in official league matches. GKS Katowice will wear it against Widzew Łódź on 31 October 2026 at 20:15 CET (round 13 of the PKO BP Ekstraklase, Arena Katowice), while Baník Ostrava will wear it against Viktoria Plzeň on 1 November 2026 at 15:00 CET (round 13 of the Czech Chance Liga, Městský stadion Ostrava).

And behind it is a relationship that began in the stands three decades ago.

O4 BRIEF

WHAT HAPPENED?

GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava created a joint shirt to celebrate 30 years of supporter friendship. Both clubs will wear it in official league matches.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The same design will appear in two countries and two leagues, while each club keeps its own crest, sponsor and commercial identity.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

Can a football shirt represent two clubs without either club giving up its own identity?

GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava Create a Joint Football Shirt

The joint shirt celebrates 30 years of friendship between the GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava supporter groups. The project was created with Macron, the technical partner of both clubs, and uses a shared black design with a combined crest representing GKS and Baník.

The shirt also references the industrial and Silesian identity shared by Katowice and Ostrava, two cities whose histories have long been connected with mining and heavy industry. The number 30 appears on the back, together with the dates 1996–2026 and the phrase “Silesian Family”.

It is therefore more than a standard anniversary shirt. The design turns a supporters' relationship into a physical symbol. The shirt was presented on 3 October 2026 at a friendship match between GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava at Arena Katowice, which ended 1–1 in front of almost 10,000 supporters.

Why GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava Are Wearing the Same Shirt

The shirt will not simply be displayed or sold as a collector's item. Both clubs will actually wear the design during official league matches.

That is what makes the project particularly unusual. The same football shirt will become part of two separate matchdays, two leagues and two club identities. The clubs are not merging their identities. They are temporarily sharing one.

The 30-Year Friendship Between GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava

The relationship between GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava began in 1996 through their supporters. It was not originally created as a commercial partnership between the two clubs.

Supporters from Katowice and Ostrava began visiting each other's matches and building personal relationships that gradually developed into one of the better-known Polish-Czech football friendships. The connection has continued for three decades through away trips, matches, shared celebrations and regular contact between the two fan communities.

That history is important because it explains why the new shirt has meaning beyond its design. The product came after the relationship. Not the other way around.

How the GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava Friendship Began in 1996

The first contacts between the two supporter groups date to 1996. According to accounts of the friendship, one of the early encounters involved Baník supporters travelling to Katowice and establishing contact with GKS fans.

The meeting quickly developed into a much deeper relationship, with supporters travelling between Ostrava and Katowice and attending each other's matches. The friendship was strengthened by the geographical and cultural proximity of the two cities.

Both Katowice and Ostrava are major industrial cities in the broader Silesian region, with strong working-class traditions and football cultures. Over time, the relationship became known as the “Silesian Family.”

What the GKS Katowice and Baník Ostrava Shirt Represents

The football shirt is one of the strongest symbols of identity in the sport. It normally answers a simple question:

Who do you belong to?

The GKS–Baník shirt gives that question a different answer. For this particular project, belonging does not stop with one club.

The combined badge places both identities on the same object, while the “Silesian Family” reference connects the shirt to the history of the supporters rather than simply to the 2026 season. The result is a temporary shared identity without either club giving up its own.

Superbet on the GKS Katowice Shirt and Fortuna on the Baník Ostrava Shirt

For GKS Katowice, Superbet remains on the front of the shirt. For Baník Ostrava, Fortuna retains its position as the club's shirt sponsor. The two versions can therefore look almost identical at first glance while still carrying different commercial identities.

This creates an interesting distinction: The shirt is shared. The sponsorship is not. The same principle applies to the competition and club-specific markings.

The collaboration has a common visual centre, but each club retains the elements required by its own football environment.

How the GKS and Baník Shirt Will Be Sold

The joint shirt is also being positioned as a limited-edition collectible. Only 500 shirts will be available for sale for each club, giving the project a deliberately restricted production run.

The shirt went on sale on 5 October, with additional personalisation options available. That scarcity gives the product another layer. A supporter is not simply buying a new football shirt. They are buying a physical piece of a 30-year relationship.

Why the GKS–Baník Shirt Is More Than Football Merchandise

This is where the project becomes particularly interesting from a football-business perspective. Many clubs create anniversary shirts. Many clubs create collaboration shirts. Many clubs sell limited editions. But the strongest products often begin with a story that already exists.

In this case, the story came first. The friendship between GKS and Baník has existed since 1996. The shirt simply gives that relationship a new physical form. The commercial product is therefore not inventing the emotional value. It is packaging it.

What the GKS–Baník Collaboration Says About Football Identity

The project shows how football identity can move beyond the traditional club-versus-club model. A shirt usually separates supporters. This one connects them. A crest usually identifies one club. This one identifies two.

A sponsorship normally communicates one commercial relationship. These shirts demonstrate that two different commercial ecosystems can exist within one shared design. That makes the collaboration more than a visual curiosity. It is an example of how supporter culture, design and football commerce can overlap.

When a Football Shirt Becomes More Than Club Merchandise

The GKS–Baník shirt is ultimately a product of three things coming together: supporter culture, design and commercial football.

The supporters created the relationship. The clubs turned that relationship into an official project. Macron provided the common technical platform. And the limited-edition release turned the story into merchandise. None of those elements works independently. The shirt works because there is 30 years of history behind it. Together, those elements have created something football rarely allows: a shared symbol of belonging.

It began with supporters crossing a border in the 1990s. Thirty years later, that friendship will cross the touchline too. One shirt. Two clubs. Two leagues. And 30 years of history behind it.
