Ajax

The shirt of a generation that seemed to come from nowhere, and then conquered Europe. Designed by Umbro with ABN AMRO across the chest, Ajax’s classic white shirt and broad red central stripe became the uniform of Louis van Gaal’s extraordinary young side.

With players such as Frank de Boer, Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Jari Litmanen, Marc Overmars and Patrick Kluivert, Ajax won the Eredivisie and went through the entire Champions League campaign unbeaten. In the final in Vienna on 24 May 1995, 18-year-old Kluivert came off the bench to score the only goal against defending champions AC Milan.

It was Ajax’s fourth European Cup, and one of football’s great changing-of-the-guard moments: a team built largely around homegrown talent defeating one of Europe’s established superpowers.

The shirt remains inseparable from that team: Amsterdam, Umbro, ABN AMRO, Van Gaal and a generation of players who would go on to define European football!
