1980 — 2000
There is something special about a local brand standing alongside its hometown club, especially when both reach the highest level of English football.
THE STORY
Newcastle Brown Ale
Newcastle United’s first-ever shirt sponsor arrived in 1980, when local brewer Newcastle Breweries placed its branding on the club’s famous black-and-white stripes. The partnership ran until 1986 before returning in 1990, with Newcastle Brown Ale becoming one of the defining sponsor marks of the club’s early Premier League era.

The familiar circular Newcastle Brown Ale logo featured on some of United’s most recognisable shirts of the 1990s, including the iconic 1995–97 adidas home shirt worn by Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers. The brand’s connection with the city made it more than a conventional commercial partnership: it became part of the visual memory of Newcastle United and its football culture.
