The Cherries

THE STORY

Bournemouth’s crest has undergone several major transformations since the club’s early days. The first designs were relatively traditional, before the club adopted the now-familiar footballer heading a ball, a motif that became closely associated with Bournemouth from the 1970s onward.

The cherry motif became particularly prominent in the 1980s, reflecting the club’s growing association with the nickname “The Cherries.” In 1988, the footballer-and-ball design was refined into a shield, while the 1994 version added the AFC Bournemouth banner.

In 2013, the club introduced a more modern version of the shield, simplifying the design while retaining the footballer, ball and red-and-black colours. In 2024, Bournemouth introduced a new circular crest, as alternative one, built around three cherries, the year 1899 and the words “The Cherries.” It marked a significant visual shift away from the footballer motif and toward the symbol that has long defined the club’s identity.
