Provincia di Palermo

2002 — 2006

In 2003/04, Palermo’s shirt carried more than a sponsor. Provincia di Palermo was not a company, but the name of the club’s own territory, turning the famous pink jersey into a symbol of something deeper: club, city and home.

THE STORY

Most football shirts carry the name of a company.

Palermo’s carried the name of a place.

In 2003/04, across the famous pink shirt worn by Luca Toni during the club’s promotion-winning season, stood a simple sponsor: Provincia di Palermo. Not a bank. Not an airline. Not a multinational brand. The name belonged to Palermo’s own provincial administration. And perhaps that was exactly what made it so memorable.

Provincia di Palermo had already appeared on the club’s shirts before that season and would remain there until 2006, accompanying Palermo from Serie B into its long-awaited return to Serie A. It was not simply sponsoring a football team. In a way, the territory itself was travelling with it.

The symbolism went even further. Match-worn shirts from that period also featured the emblem of the Regione Siciliana alongside the club crest, Lotto logo and the name Provincia di Palermo. On one pink shirt, you could find almost an entire map of belonging: the club, the province and the island.

That is what makes this sponsor different.

Palermo did not put a product on its chest. It put home.
