There are shirts remembered for how they looked. And then there are shirts remembered for what they carried.
For Palermo, the 2003/04 Lotto shirt belongs firmly to the second category.
Pink, of course, with black details. A colour combination that had long made Palermo an exception in a sport built around safer choices. But that season, the pink meant something more. It was worn during the club's return to Serie A after more than three decades away.
And at the centre of it all was Luca Toni.
Before the World Cup. Before Bayern Munich. Before becoming one of the most recognisable Italian strikers of his generation, Toni wore pink and scored goals almost every weekend. His 30 goals helped fire Palermo to the Serie B title and turned an entire city into believers again. That is why this shirt matters.
It is not simply a beautiful piece of football design, although there is something wonderfully Italian about its combination of pink, black and the old Lotto logo. It is a shirt tied to a moment when a sleeping club woke up.
Perhaps that is the romance of Palermo. When everyone else saw black, Palermo saw pink. And in 2004, with Luca Toni wearing number nine, that pink finally led them home.
