Inter Milan
Nerazzurri
Inter Milan have built an identity that extends far beyond the football pitch. Since the club was founded in 1908, its crest has evolved through political upheaval, changing design trends and the demands of modern football branding. Yet, across more than a century of redesigns, one element has remained central to its visual identity: the interlocking initials that represent Internazionale Milano.
THE STORY
1908–1928: The Original Monogram - Designed by club founder Giorgio Muggiani in 1908, the first crest featured the intertwined letters F, C, I and M, representing Football Club Internazionale Milano. Set within circular rings of black, blue, gold and white, the design established the visual foundations that would influence many of the club’s future crests.
1928–1945: Ambrosiana and Political Change - During the Fascist regime, Inter was forced to merge with another Milanese club and adopt the name Ambrosiana. The original monogram gave way to alternative designs featuring elements associated with Milan, including the Visconti serpent and the city's red cross. The club’s identity changed several times during this period, reflecting the political pressures of the era.
1945–1979: A Return to Tradition - Following the Second World War, the club reclaimed its Internazionale identity and returned to variations of the original circular monogram. Although the colours, proportions and surrounding rings changed over the following decades, the intertwined initials remained the defining feature of the crest.
1979–1988: The Serpent Takes Centre Stage - In 1979, Inter introduced a striking departure from its traditional design. The new crest featured a shield with diagonal black, blue and white sections and a serpent-inspired motif. The Biscione, a historic symbol associated with Milan and the Visconti family, connected the club to the city’s heritage while giving its identity a distinctive new look.
1988–2021: Modernising the Classic - Inter gradually returned to its circular monogram, refining it for a new era of commercial growth and global recognition. Later versions introduced more prominent lettering, the club’s founding year and a more streamlined visual style. The crests used between 1998 and 2021 reflected the growing importance of a consistent identity across shirts, broadcasting, merchandise and digital platforms.
2021–Present: A New Digital Identity - In 2021, Inter unveiled a redesigned crest created in collaboration with the Munich-based design studio Bureau Borsche. The new emblem simplified the traditional monogram to focus primarily on the letters I and M, representing Internazionale Milano. Its cleaner geometry and reduced detail were designed to work across digital platforms and contemporary brand applications. The redesign also introduced a subtle linguistic connection: the initials can be read as “I M,” evoking the English phrase “I am” and reinforcing the relationship between the club and its supporters.
More Than a Badge - Inter’s crest is a reflection of the club’s changing identity, its relationship with Milan and the evolution of football itself. From Muggiani’s original monogram to the minimalist emblem of today, the designs have changed, but the black-and-blue colours and the ambition to represent something beyond the pitch have endured.
